  • Food Rescue Hub Presentation (by Chris)
 • Overview of the Food Rescue Initiative
  – Chris introduced the concept of a “Food Rescue Hub” aimed at collecting surplus food and redistributing it to local charities and groups serving those in need.
  – The initiative addresses significant food waste (with an estimated $58 billion worth wasted annually in Canada, 40% of which is recoverable) and rising hunger issues.

 • Current Operations and Challenges

  – Existing partnerships (e.g., with Harvest Hands and other local food rescue entities) provide weekly donations of surplus items ranging from bakery goods and produce to other perishable items.
  – The current setup at South Gate Center is nearing its limits due to space constraints, limiting the volume of food that can be accepted.

 • Future Plans

  – There is a need for dedicated warehouse space to expand operations.
  – The project has been presented to the Mayor’s task force and will be followed by an ask for county funding.
  – The initiative is intended to support various community groups (including shelters, low-income families, schools, and seniors), ensuring a more sustainable, dignified system for food distribution.
