Robin Ferro introduced District Governor Mike with background on his Rotary career. Mike’s address to Rotary reiterated Theme ‘Service above self’ to encourage Rotary to change lives.

There are 1.2 Million Rotarians now, there were 1.2 mil Rotarians 5yrs ago and 1.2 mil Rotarians 10yrs ago. Rotarians have the need to feel a part of, be welcomed, get engaged and involved. The key to the theme is ‘get engaged’. As Global grants become available – join in don’t just provide money.

Governors and president elects were asked to give a personal donation to Rotary, this was the first time a personal ask had been used in this way. Get engaged!

District Governor Mike answered questions from the floor on the different kinds of grants Rotary is involved in and how matching grants work; there are 3 kinds of grants – District, where monies given through Rotary International that are not used come back to the district after 3 years and put in the global funds – Global, this is where monies given to projects have to be sustainable and work with Rotary clubs at both ends with a value of at least $30000.00 – Partner, major organisation must be a funding partner.

District Governor Mike also answered questions on how many cases of Polio there are in 2013? There were 180-200 cases last year and unfortunately due to reoccurrence from Niger into Somalia, Pakistan and Afghanistan this year the count is 300.

Dave Harris and Gary Baumbach gave elevator speeches.
